Quote ( Jimmy Holm @ January 30th 2023,19:15:19 ) Perhaps if they rushed the training they could see their first combat in late March but that would not be ideal.
According to my information, the Ukrainian military is already training with the Leopards. How long they have been training - I do not know.
My assumption is that until March there will be news about the fighting of these tanks.
I think that the question here is not the readiness of the crews, but the political need to demonstrate their participation in the battles.
|
|
|
I don't think there's any such need and it would just be dumb to throw half-trained crews at prepared defensive lines.
The more time Ukraine takes with the training, the better the effect will be. And it will take a LOT of training even for experienced tank crews. Especially if they want to link them up (as they should) with western IFVs and use proper western combined arms strategies.
I can't even guess how long it would take to get them proficient enough to master that with all these new vehicles and combine them into a single unit, but if they do it they have a real chance at punching through Russian lines.
If they just use a company at a time of half-trained Leopards they won't have much impact.
I guess it depends largely on what Russia does. There are rumors of both sides preparing offensives. If Russia starts a big offensive and makes gains, maybe the western equipment has to be thrown into battle earlier than they'd like.
We'll see.

It usually takes between 12-22 week to train Leopard / Abrams tanks.
I wished the US/EU would've done this sooner but they were clearly hoping that the Russians would pull out or diplomatic solutions instead.
Unfortunately that hasn't worked so once the tanks are involved, it won't be long until fighter jets are involved, which should've been done at the beginning to control the air space.
Still lives will be lost and I just hope Putin, Dimitry and all the other scum are soon wiped off this planet.

I had to dig pretty deep to find this old clip. Hopefully it will look something like this in Ukraine later this year.

I have not seen either side in this war pull off a proper armored assault yet, it's always a couple tanks or a couple BMPs in a row following a road.
It's never a mixed armored formation smashing through a defense.

Quote ( Jimmy Holm @ January 30th 2023,20:32:20 ) I have not seen either side in this war pull off a proper armored assault yet, it's always a couple tanks or a couple BMPs in a row following a road.
I have not seen the clip, but I agree that now the participation of a large number of tanks in one battle is unrealistic. First of all, because of the presence of air reconnaissance on both sides. Almost any movement of a group of heavy equipment a few kilometers before the front becomes clearly visible from drones. And this group immediately becomes a target for long-range artillery. Moreover, if ordinary soldiers can still survive after shelling, then the tanks will be destroyed without even reaching the front line.
From the current situation, I saw the use of tanks only during the assault on city blocks. I remember you and I discussed a video of a Ukrainian military man shooting a javelin at a tank from a high-rise building. The tank keeps moving.
Russia has over 12,000 tanks. If it was possible to win with the help of tanks, they would have been in Ukraine long ago.

Quote ( Dmitry Knyazev @ January 30th 2023,20:42:54 ) I agree that now the participation of a large number of tanks in one battle is unrealistic.
I don't think it's unrealistic in general, I just don't think either side has mastered combined arms. Which is pretty strange in Russia's case. Russia had the combined arms doctrine very early, before WW2 it was all drawn up. Then Stalin had the generals responsible for this doctrine shot which led to armor being used the wrong way as nobody knew how to do it properly in the early stages of the war.
Anyway point being, Russia has known combined arms for a long time, but it has somehow never been capable of it in practice.
Quote ( Dmitry Knyazev @ January 30th 2023,20:42:54 ) I remember you and I discussed a video of a Ukrainian military man shooting a javelin at a tank from a high-rise building. The tank keeps moving.
That was not a javelin, it was an NLAW and the reason the tank kept moving is because it was shot from too close. The NLAW warhead has a minimum range before it gets armed.
So what happened in that clip was the equivalent of throwing a grenade with the pin still attached.
Quote ( Dmitry Knyazev @ January 30th 2023,20:42:54 ) Russia has over 12,000 tanks. If it was possible to win with the help of tanks, they would have been in Ukraine long ago.
No, Russia has 12,000 hulls. The vast majority of which are rusted steel hunks that could never be brought back into service. Ukraine in fact had the same issue, lack of maintenance and tanks left out in large parking lots year round rusting away.
Like these, these are Ukrainian tanks in 2014. These tanks are far beyond saving and Russia has similar parks to this as seen from satellite images.

⚡️NATO sees Russia preparing for a new offensive, with the aim of capturing all of Ukraine - Stoltenberg
“We see that the Russians are preparing for a new offensive, that they are mobilizing more soldiers, more than 200,000 people, and possibly even more. That they are actively building up weapons and ammunition. And most importantly, we do not see any signs that President Putin has changed its overall goal of this invasion, which is to control all of Ukraine," Stoltenberg said.

🇨🇦 "British Columbia becomes the first province in Canada to decriminalize heroin, fentanyl, cocaine and other hard drugs": Following euthanasia, drugs were officially legalized in Canada
“Starting Tuesday, British Columbians over the age of 18 will be allowed to carry up to 2.5 grams of drugs such as cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine and morphine. The provincial government has given permission to try the plan for three years, when those with less than 2.5 grams will not be detained and drugs will not be confiscated. Instead, residents in possession of drugs will be offered information about health and social services. “Decriminalizing people who use drugs removes the fear and shame associated with substance use and ensures they feel more secure in seeking life-saving support,” said Jennifer Whiteside, BC Secretary of State for Mental Health and Addictions. Supporters of the plan hope it will help manage the surge in overdose deaths. But many critics say it doesn't go far enough and that 2.5 grams is too low a threshold that won't matter to heavy users. “Decriminalization, in my opinion, would be that if you have a substance for personal use, the police should not play any role in this. What you choose to use for your personal needs is your choice,” said Lisa Lapointe, Chief Coroner of British Columbia.

"Nuclear Alert After Failed to Fix Trident Submarine with Super Glue": The British repaired a nuclear submarine with superglue by bolting pipes into a nuclear reactor because they were too lazy to fiddle. “Senior Navy leaders, furious, have ordered an investigation after workers on the Trident submarine could have caused a disaster by gluing broken bolts in a nuclear reactor chamber. The quality of the repair to the vital cooling pipes was only revealed when one bolt fell off during an inspection. It once split due to improper overtightening, but instead of reporting damage and wasting time drilling, defense contractor Babcock's civilian staff simply glued the heads back on. A Navy source said Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace was furious. Glued bolts - and there were at least seven of them - held the insulation on the coolant pipes, which prevents the Chernobyl scenario. Former submarine captain Ryan Ramsay said: “This is a serious trust issue. Makes you wonder what else went wrong. Such damage should have been detected by quality control well before this late stage of inspection.

Asia Times:
“NATO countries have finally decided to send their tanks to Ukraine. After the Russians retreated from Kyiv, instead of using their victory as leverage to reach a negotiated settlement with Moscow, the Ukrainians went on the offensive. But as soon as the war turned from defensive to offensive, everything changed for the Ukrainians, and they quickly ran out of steam.
✔️ Now Russia is fully mobilized, it has deployed somewhere around 350,000 troops and is preparing for a massive counterattack. To prevent a complete rout, NATO intervenes again, sending Kyiv a hodgepodge of tanks. Western analysts, having abandoned rationality and honesty, have become nothing more than supporters of this decision.
✔️ But when one looks at the time frame, the fragility of NATO supply chains to Ukraine, and how depleted Ukrainian defensive lines are already buckling under still limited Russian pressure, one cannot help but wonder if these NATO actions are the right ones? This will not help Ukraine. This will kill even more Ukrainians and lead to a wider war with the West. Hence the current increased requests for the supply of F-16 fighter jets and other modern aircraft to Ukraine. After all, without air cover, NATO tanks would be easy targets for Russian aircraft.
✔️ The risk that Russia will use the sending of American tanks into battle as a casus belli against NATO and the US itself weighs heavily on the clumsy minds of American politicians. This explains why the enthusiasm of the Americans for sending these critical systems was so moderate.
✔️ The Russians are focusing in such a way that their offensive will be terrible, eventually breaking through the weary Ukrainian resistance - all while Ukraine sends several companies of NATO tanks into chaos and receives a thrashing for a quixotic attempt. Unfortunately for Kyiv, these timeless factors are now working against him. The strategic goals were to be the preservation of the Ukrainian core in the western part of the country and the earliest possible cessation of the offensive, a cessation that could not be achieved by force of arms alone.
✔️ Because of Kyiv's inability to see this, coupled with the fantastic (almost childish) visions of its NATO supporters, Ukraine is about to be crushed over the next six months by an onslaught of a rallied Russia. NATO will deplete its own stockpiles of weapons and treasury, and this will bring the world to the brink of another global conflict of the great powers. All efforts are in vain!”

🇫🇷 Pierre de Gaulle, grandson of French President Charles de Gaulle, spoke about the actions of the West and relations with Russia.
"The recent decision of the West to send heavy tanks to the front only adds even more negative points to this war and risks unleashing a third world war. I believe that this is the line of the West that needs to be contained. Recently there have been various scandals related to the corruption of the Ukrainian regime. Zelensky chose to sell his people to the Americans.
Now is the time to make peace, reason with the Americans, and reach a sustainable, lasting peace with Russia. The time has come for France and its President to remember that they are a great independent nation and to play the role they truly have. It is necessary to provide Russia with serious security guarantees, which has not been the case since the Minsk agreements.
Now France has become unfriendly to Russia because of our short-sighted policies and erroneous decisions. She blindly follows American policy."

Defeating tigers and panthers has very little to do with combined arms. But yes, the Russians certainly became more competent over time again and after WW2 they've clearly lost it all again. Corruption? Complacency? Nepotism? Incompetence? I don't know the reason, but the results are clear.
Quote ( Dmitry Knyazev @ February 1st 2023,19:18:58 ) How well do American tanks feel in the city?
No different, don't bring tanks into cities if you can avoid it. And if you absolutely have to, they HAVE to have infantry cover.

"Pierre de Gaulle, grandson of French President Charles de Gaulle" So with this name he has to have good advice ;)
But ... strangely : "My brother Pierre’s analysis does not involve anyone other than himself, that is neither I nor our family, and even less General de Gaulle," replied Yves de Gaulle. who was commissioned by his father Philippe to represent the de Gaulle family and defend his interests.
"As Talleyrand would have said, anything excessive is insignificant, and I add saddening. Everyone knows that General de Gaulle was for the Europe of Nations, intransigent on sovereignty and against dictatorships», said Hervé Gaymard, president of the Charles-de-Gaulle Foundation to the Parisian."

On the other hand, if you want to see the Russian army like this, this is your opinion.

Competence is not the same as victory. The Americans are no doubt the strongest and most competent military force on the planet. By far. The reason they don't "win" recent conflicts is because ultimate victory is about human will, not weapons and technology. You cannot win a war without breaking the will to resist of the people you're attempting to defeat. Same reason you lost the war in Ukraine the moment it started. They will resist you forever, no matter how the fight on the battlefield would go.
Even if your military had been competent, crushed the Ukrainian army and occupied Ukraine, they would still never have stopped fighting. You'd bleed until you withdraw. Now it seems you can't even achieve the first step.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine partly to assert his country’s regional dominance once and for all. Nearly a year on, Putin has achieved the opposite — and not just in Kyiv.
Officials from ex-Soviet states in central Asia and the Caucasus say the war has prompted their governments to look for ways to reduce dependence on Moscow by turning to rival powers including Turkey, the European Union and Middle East countries. All spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid antagonizing the Kremlin.
Current and former Russian officials, also speaking on condition they not be identified, said Moscow is reacting nervously, even harshly, as the Kremlin becomes less certain of its ability to assert influence in its own backyard."
"Announcing his Feb. 24 invasion, Putin at the time cited Kazakhstan as a model for the kind of relationship he wanted Russia to have with ex-Soviet states. He’d sent troops to help President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev crush deadly riots only the previous month.
Yet Tokayev has since disagreed openly with Putin’s justification for the war, while allowing hundreds of thousands of Russians to flee to central Asia’s largest oil exporter after Russia announced mobilization in September. Schulmann, who was designated a “foreign agent” by the Kremlin days after she left Russia in April, was welcomed in Kazakhstan this month by the head of its Senate, the country’s second-highest official, and offered a professorship at one of its universities.
“Russia is becoming more and more toxic,” said Beibit Apsenbetov, a former board member of Kazakhstan’s largest bank, Kazkommertsbank JSC. “What to do when your neighbor is a drunkard and rowdy, and you can’t move out?”"

🇺🇦 🇵🇱 Polish language may become mandatory for learning in Ukraine
In Ukraine, the Polish language can be included in the list of UPE subjects (mandatory school final exams), - Irina Vereshchuk
"The Ukrainian side must develop a strategy for passing exams in the Polish language. And if this requires amendments to the legislation, it is necessary to start this process today," Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said.
According to her, this will allow Ukraine to integrate into the Polish space.

🇺🇸 The Biden administration is involved in the Nord Stream sabotage, Fox News host Tucker Carlson said.
He noted that Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland "was the driving force behind the conflict in Ukraine and helped it start." In January 2022, she threatened to blow up the pipelines to prevent Russia from sending gas to Europe.
And then in September there was a terrorist attack on the Nord Streams. And according to Carlson, it was "the largest natural disaster in history, created by human hands."
“We were somewhat surprised when Nuland admitted last week that she [the US administration] did it,” the host said and showed a speech in which the assistant secretary says that he was “glad” at the sabotage.
“She admitted it, but no one noticed it,” Carlson added.

Sorry, I don't remember what you answered the question: Why did De Gaulle lose so much popular support that he had? I’m not a historian Dmitry , so to answer that question I’d have to do some research. I know a number of things, of course, but I never really got involved. Probably what is called the usury of power, maybe also that society had changed.
When he came to power the main problem was the war in Algeria and he made sure to stop this war and that Algeria became independent.
Before he left, of course, there was May 1968, and there was a need for change at that time. Then a referendum in 1969 he lost and he left.
What I see anyway, trying to look at his career, aside from what I’ve put here, is a lot of things I don’t know, I’m probably not really interested in, it was another time, the world has changed a lot since. Now, why would you want to know why he lost popular support ?

Yeah Crimea is Ukraine, but it is true you had a lot of supporters there as well as in the east. And Russia (or the USSR) has also had a habit of deporting populations that disagree with them from occupied areas and thereby achieving a majority of support among the remainder combined with Russians sent to inhabit the newly occupied areas.
This works on a smaller scale, but the more people there are the less this is possible. You can do it with hundreds of thousands or a few million, but you can't deport 30 million people.

Quote ( Dmitry Knyazev @ February 1st 2023,20:39:39 ) Polish language may become mandatory for learning in Ukraine Great title for KP, isn't it Knyazev? Actually - another "sensation" for the domestic Russian consumer.
In Ukraine, after we got rid of the Soviet legacy in the system of higher education, after school - young people take a comprehensive entrance exam to uni - where there are compulsory components and components of free choice.
A foreign language is a free choice component - you can take it, you can choose something else, for example, geography or biology. Now you can choose - English, German, French and a few more (I don't remember the exact list) languages. Vereshchuk own allowed, as she has nothing to do with the education system, that in the future it will be possible to take the Polish language in Ukraine.
Russia made a fake out of this, which should reinforce its earlier narrative that Poland will take over the west of Ukraine.
Quote ( Dmitry Knyazev @ February 1st 2023,20:47:25 ) But my personal opinion is that Western Ukraine should be given to Poland and let the Poles themselves catch Bandera in the forests. It's nice to see statements like this. This means only one thing - even such imperialists as Knyazev are afraid of what awaits them in the West of Ukraine, if Russia suddenly turns up there in some incomprehensible way.
I remember - Jimmy, you once described a hypothetical situation in which Russia crossed the Finnish border. A situation where the Finnish police protected the Russian army from angry Finns with hunting weapons :) All the same awaits Russia in central and western Ukraine.
Yes, in the east - many years of Russian propaganda and centuries of cultural influence (due to too close geographic location), as well as a policy of forced resettlement - have made the majority of the population ... no, not loyal to Russia, but inactive in their worldwiew. They didn't care. But people from those places that are now internally displaced people are gradually realizing that for many years Russia has hung a veil over their eyes, which literally fell off in a couple of months of living next to those peoples, which Russia had frightened them all their lives.

A year has passed - and we are only now talking about tanks. Why weren't they sent there on the first day?
Agree with this much. Our western governments are way too slow and wary. Even now, the numbers sent are insufficient. We need to send hundreds. A thousand. It will happen sooner or later but the longer it takes, the more people have to die.
If only we sent everything last year, the war would be over. If we sent everything now, the war would be over in 1 year.
The way we do it now, all we're achieving is to keep Ukraine in the fight, neither side will be able to achieve enough superiority over the other to end the war.
We have to send more. Way more. Not gradually over the course of years. 2000 artillery pieces, 1000 tanks and 300 aircraft.
Then we'd be talking. And that's something western nations COULD do if they really wanted to. I think you should left some tanks in home. Just in case... Every weapon that you send to Ukraine is a weapon that don't have for your defense. Old soviet weapons and ammunitions is a thing, modern tanks is another, and planes is a whole new level
