Outbraking: NASCAR (Season 2)

“Boogity, boogity, boogity, let's go racing boys!”

Strategy, timing and speed are all important – play your cards right to make it to victory lane, enter ‘The Play-Offs’ and be crowned champion at the end of the season.

This game is based upon Gunter Bosman’s Outbraking concept, however this version has quite a lot of tweaks (and is drastically simplified vs Season 1), so I would advise reading the rules even if you played Season 1.

Please post ##Join if you would like to play, along with the name of the driver (see post #4) you would like to represent.

Your team (Chevrolet, Ford or Toyota) will be determined by the order you join in – 1st person to join is in Chevrolet, 2nd is in Ford, 3rd is in Toyota, 4th is in Chevrolet etc. etc. That should keep the teams relatively fair and even.

The Championship

The season is loosely based on recent NASCAR seasons but with no repeated races, and as such will consist of 23 races, with ‘The Play-Offs’ for the championship taking place in the final 10 races as normal. The schedule is as follows:

Race 1 – Daytona International Speedway, Florida (02/04 - 5 Laps)
Race 2 – Homestead-Miami Speedway, Florida (04/06 - 4 Laps)
Race 3 – Atlanta Motor Speedway, Georgia (03/08 - 4 Laps)
Race 4 – Dover International Speedway, Delaware (08/10 - 5 Laps)
Race 5 – Circuit of the Americas, Texas (03/01 - 3 Laps)
Race 6 – Sonoma Raceway, California (01/05 - 4 Laps)
SEASON BREAK
Race 7 – Nashville Superspeedway, Tennessee (25/10 - 8 laps)
Race 8 – Pocono Raceway, Pennsylvania (28/12 - 8 laps)
Race 9 – Road America, Wisconsin (12/03 - 3 laps)
Race 10 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana (02/06 - 9 laps)
Race 11 – Watkins Glen International, New York (07/10 - 3 laps)
Race 12 – New Hampshire Motor Speedway, New Hampshire (15/12 - 5 laps)

THE PLAY-OFFS:

Round of 16 – Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Nevada (24/01 - 7 laps) [8 H2H winners and 4 best placed losers advance]
Round of 12 – Charlotte Motor Speedway, North Carolina (30/03 - 8 laps) - [6 H2H winners and 2 best placed losers advance]
Round of 8 – Talladega Superspeedway, Alabama - [4 H2H winners and 1 best placed loser advance]
Championship 5 – Martinsville Speedway, Virginia - [The best finishing Play-off player wins the title]

The Play-Offs - How it works

16 drivers will take part in the Play-Offs - these 16 qualifers are as follows:

Kurt Busch @Mikko Suhonen (E)
Juan Pablo Montoya @Rimantas Sagatas (M2)
Martin Truex Jr. @Stefan Gommans (P2)
Chase Elliott @Greg Tierney (P8)
Joey Logano @Mairo Toom (A15) - ELIMINATED IN R16
Alex Bowman @Dion Staal (A72)
Erik Jones @Matthew Standen (P6) - DNQ in R16
Kevin Harvick @Tim Wagner (A9)
Christopher Bell @Mike Baston (P23)
Kyle Busch @Ivelin Dobrev (R140)
Ryan Blaney @Stephen Rawson (A63) - DNQ in R16
Anthony Alfredo @Ricardo Antunes (R97)
Daniel Suarez @Nicholas Bryant (A23)
Chase Briscoe @Steve Wade (A19)
Ryan Newman @Kai Wen Chew (M3)
Brad Keselowski @Brad Marshall (A29) - DNQ in R16

The way the seeding will work is that if everyone takes part it will simply be Kurt Busch (#1) vs Brad Keselowski (#16), #2 vs #15 etc. etc. However, if anyone does not take part in the next race, they will automatically drop to the bottom of the rankings thereby giving the #1 seed a BYE in the round.

The 8 Head to Head Winners will advance to the next round, plus the best 4 finishers in the race (of the remaining 8 drivers).

All the above takes place if we have more than 12 Play-Off qualifiers taking part. If (like this race) we only have 12 - or less - Play-Off drivers taking part in this race, we will skip straight to the Round of 12 scenario, where it's 6 Head to Head match-ups, with 6 Winners and 2 Best Placed Losers advancing.

There are no more bonus cards that are going to be given out, though Penalty Cards will still exist.

https://i.imgur.com/oBnUqam.jpeg

We say goodbye to Logano from the Play-Off picture here, despite being one of the pre-Play-Off favourites to at least make it to the Round of 8...meanwhile Kurt Busch's previous League prowess comes in handy as he avoids elimination by virtue of having a BYE this round. Though he can't afford any mistakes next time out...

Meanwhile Briscoe takes his 2nd win of the season, while the lowest ranked player left in the Play-Offs - Newman - comes home a very respectable 2nd place, with Bowman finishing 3rd to bolster his own hopes of an easier draw.

https://i.imgur.com/XcBBLGK.jpeg

The Top 4 may remain in their same positions again, though this is the closest that Montoya has been to Kurt Busch for a while now (17 points) - which could conceivably be closed in just 1 race! Truex. Jr looks fairly set in 3rd, though Elliott now has Bowman breathing down his neck for 4th place.

In the next Play-Off Round, we will see 6 match-ups with the 6 winners and 2 best runners-up advancing - and it will be Kurt Busch v Newman, Montoya v Suarez (in an all Chevrolet match), Truex. Jr v Alfredo (in another all-Chevrolet match), Elliott v Briscoe, Bowman v Kyle Busch (in an all Toyota match) and Harvick v Bell (in an all Ford match). That means we are guaranteed to have all 3 manufacturers present in the Round of 8.

https://i.imgur.com/TwXcDVj.jpeg

Toyota gain on Ford again and are now just 7 points behind - with Bowman pushing Elliott for 4th in the standings helping the Toyota team to improve! Meanwhile, Ford slip again to 0.7 behind Chevrolet on average points with the Round of 12 up next...

Old post #3 posted Mar 26th 2021, 01:05:01 (last edited Jun 23rd 2023, 08:52:30 by Jonathan Beagles) Quote
The Rules

At the start of each race weekend, you will receive a set of cards, which number from 1-10. Exactly what cards you receive depends on your manufacturer and a few other elements.

Qualifying

You will initially need to choose which cards from your starting deck to use in your 1st stint of the race. This represents how much fuel you have on board. You must choose between 5 and 8 cards (10 cards in a road course) in total. The more cards you have, the later you will move compared to the rest of the field (due to having a heavier fuel load).

In the same PM you will also send your “qualifying card” (separate to the 5-8 cards you select for your race fuel, or 5-10 for a road course). The higher the card, the higher up the field you qualify. However, this card will not be returned to your deck after being played (it will be lost for the entire race).

Race

There will be a rolling start, so the player that qualifies on Pole will get to move first, followed by 2nd on the grid etc. etc. on the 1st turn. After the 1st turn the move order will come into play (see "Moves and Blocking" below).

From then on you will simply play 2 cards per turn (where possible), with the aim of getting to the finish first.

Each race will last as long as is needed – the deadlines for moves being sent will be the same as GPRO race deadlines (Tuesdays and Fridays). However, if the whole race responds quickly enough then the next moves can be made within a quicker amount of time if possible.

Failure to submit valid cards will result in your lowest remaining 2 cards being played for you.

Finishing the Race with Penalties

If you finish the race with a penalty, you will lose the following amounts from your totals:

Each remanining speeding penalty = 5 spaces
Each double-stacking penalty = 2 spaces

This means that if you have e.g. a 5 space penalty and only finish 4 spaces past the finish-line, that you will actually finish your turn 1 space before the finish line and have to submit a new card the following turn.

If 2 or more cars finish in the same turn, then the car that will be considered ahead at the finish will be the car that moves the furthest amount of spaces past the finish line (once penalties are taken into account), with any ties settled by the highest overall total of their combined cards in their hand.

Pit-Stops

When you come into the pits, the pit-lane speed limit is up to 10. If you choose to come into the pits and play 2 cards that come to higher than 10 (even if achieved through bump-drafting) to do so, then you will a) end your turn 1 space after the pit-lane entry AND b) incur a 1 turn penalty for speeding in the pits (served immediately).

Bump-drafting in the pits is not possible once you start a turn within the pit-lane.

There are Pit-Boxes for each team with 4 spaces in each; there is no difference between the 4 spaces. However, you must specify which of those 4 spaces you are going to pit in. If 2 or more cars are in the same pit-box space on the same turn then the 2nd one to enter will lose 1 space, the 3rd one to enter will lose 2 spaces etc. etc. from their next move (due to double/triple stacking etc.).

When you pit, you will need to choose how many cards you take out with you for your next stint (minimum 5, maximum 8 - though maximum 10 on road courses). The more cards you pick, the more fuel you have on board but the later you will move compared to others in the field.

You can also decide to spend an extra turn in the pits to take on board an additional card of your choice (i.e. to replace a card that was discarded due to major damage).

You will gain an additional space on exiting the pit-box by hitting your marks exactly in the pit-box (i.e. if you are 2 spaces away and play a combined score of TWO). If you exit with e.g. 2x FIVE, this will not constitute a speeding penalty.

Moves and blocking

The order of moving (apart from on the 1st turn - see "Race" above for information on the 1st turn) will be determined as follows:

1 – Successful Bump-Drafting (see info below)
2 – The person with the lowest fuel amount on board (least cards)
3 – If #2 is tied then the person currently in front in the race (NB – if someone is on the inside, they will move first)
4 – Anyone with 0 cards left in their hand (they will move 1 space at a time)

If you play card values that will cause you to be blocked by someone in front of you, then you will automatically move towards the inside of the corner/straight if possible. If this is not possible then you will move outside the car blocking you.

If there is no way through on the inside or the outside, then you simply lose the remainder of your card values. Please note that a space is only consider fully blocked if it is full (3 cars per space on an oval, 2 cars per space elsewhere).

Cars ending up at the same section of track will always revert to the inside until the 3 spaces on the inside part of the track are filled up, whereupon they will start to fill up the middle etc. etc.

Bump-Drafting

This requires either good communication OR massive amounts of luck. If you are directly in front of, or directly behind, another car and you play the same combined card values as them – then you will bump-draft and be allowed to move before anyone else in the field, regardless of fuel load. You will also gain 1 bonus space by virtue of this too.

For example - if Driver A, B and C are all on the same space in that order, then A and B, B and C or A, B and C can all bump-draft by playing the same cards as one another. However, if A and C play the same card but B does not, this will not count as bump-drafting.

You can bump-draft with anyone directly in-front/behind you as long as a) there is no other car in-between you and b) you are on the same space or the space immediately in-front/behind. If there is a vacant space in between two cars, they cannot bump-draft.

Danger Zones

While the inside is the quickest route, it is also the most dangerous. At all tracks, at least one red danger zone exists – if you finish your turn in a danger zone (with at least 1 other car in that same danger zone) then a die will be rolled for each car, with the results as follows:

1 = Major damage, lose 1 card from your hand (your choice*) and you MUST pit at the end of the lap (refuelling is optional)
2-3 = Minor damage, lose 1 card from your hand OR pit at the end of the lap**
4-6 = No damage

* It remains your choice until the move deadline is reached, at which point your highest card will be taken from you!
** If you do not submit a choice before the move deadline, then your minor damage will become major damage instead!!!

Retirements

These are incredibly unlikely this season, though in theory if you had multiple major damage issues then you could keep losing cards from your hand and end up with 0 cards on-track due to damage. 0 cards due to damage = retired. You do not retire if you just end up with 0 cards in your hand due to losing spaces/messing up your pit-lane timing.

Earning/Losing Cards

It is possible to earn/lose cards to add to your deck (for the following race) as follows:

1st place = Loses 2 cards for success ballast
2nd place = Loses 1 card for success ballast
All other finishes = Earns 1 card
Last ACTIVE place = Earns 2 cards (active is defined as finishing on the lead lap under your own steam - i.e. not using the 'pushing the car' idea)

For Race 1, any earned cards will have a value of 1. For Race 2, any earned cards will have a value of 2 etc., until Race 11 where it will revert to a value of 1 again.

Any lost cards will be the choice of the individual player – if no selections are submitted in time then the cards closest to the median average (i.e. the card(s) closest to the middle numbers) will be selected.

Rimantas Sagatas (as reigning Champion) has joined by PM at 08:44 this morning. As such he has been placed in Chevrolet, per the ongoing order of Driver ##Joins.

As reigning Champion, I have allowed him to keep Juan Pablo Montoya as his driver, running with the 'AA' "number" to differentiate him from the crowd. If Rimantas does not win this season, JPM will no longer be an option for him in Season 3.

EDIT - Added an additional clarification to the Pit-Stop section:

Quote ( Jonathan Beagles @ March 26th 2021,01:05:01 )

There are Pit-Boxes for each team with 4 spaces in each; there is no difference between the 4 spaces. However, you must specify which of those 4 spaces you are going to pit in. If 2 or more cars enter the same pit-box space on the same turn then the 2nd one to enter will lose 1 space, the 3rd one to enter will lose 2 spaces etc. etc. from their next move (due to double/triple stacking etc.).

Welcome Andres - just to let you know that it is the order of joining that determines the team per this:

Quote ( Jonathan Beagles @ March 26th 2021,01:04:40 )

Your team (Chevrolet, Ford or Toyota) will be determined by the order you join in – 1st person to join is in Chevrolet, 2nd is in Ford, 3rd is in Toyota, 4th is in Chevrolet etc. etc. That should keep the teams relatively fair and even.

So you will actually be in Toyota, as Rafael hasn't yet chosen a valid driver (even if he had, you would have been in Chevrolet FYI).
