Yeah that's a possibility...although you'd likely see some people in the previous season be overlooked (you could have an extended nomination period though perhaps...).

@Jonathan Beagles (P15) @Kyle Morris (A42)

Forget the Oscars for last season and let Kyle do them as normal and then you can do your stuff at the next Oscars.

This will safe you from trying to make/find some time during your current busy period and it will get the Oscars over with and everyone can concentrate on the season 9 Oscars.

Some seasons I do nominations, others I don't. Usually, when I choose not to, it's either because I haven't been following things much that season or due to simple lack of brain space to figure out some good noms.

I feel general forum activity has been lower lately, and some of the more active people from seasons past are currently not that active. Also note that the activity gain during high Covid times is washing off again, since most parts of the world are returning to pre-Covid routine.

Add to this that online discussions in general are *very* touchy feely nowadays, with cancel culture and the obvious conflict in Eastern Europe, and you have a great list of ways to kill forum activity.

Then there's a few Oscars-specific constructs that certainly have their goals, but don't help increase the quantity of attention:

- Nominating or voting for your own (team).

Skipping a lot of votes doesn't help. People asking others to nominate someone they can't nominate themselves due to these rules doesn't help. Yes, it absolutely serves a purpose to prevent the people with the largest teams from winning.

- It's not very accessible.

Often have I cursed the Google Form for not having the descriptions/names. Copy/pasting and filling in the nominees is also easy to get turned off by. For a regular Forum Games player this is probably not too much of a threshold but if it's holding back a middle aged dad who likes playing text based games, imagine what it does for newer generations who thrive on readily accessible information.

- There's a few categories that don't really serve a purpose.

Best Crew Member is a vote between the same 3-4 people every season. Kissing Crew Ass is getting really old really fast.

The HoF has been saturated. Putting someone in there every season feels very forced. The fact that I am actually *nominated* for this has to be saying enough. In my eyes, a HoF should be based on merit, it should be possible to put multiple people in and if it has to be a regularly occurring thing, it should be once every 5-10 seasons or so.

I do have some thoughts that might help in getting an Award Ceremony that serves a broader purpose than the forum regulars:

- Include awards based on pure merit. We could celebrate the OBR winners, someone with the largest amount of randoms, the Longest/Shortest Pit Stop Award, just spitballin' here. The goal is to make it not just be a popularity contest, but also to include people that would not necessarily be involved with the awards. Celebrate statistics!
The best part may be that this doesn't even require extra work for the community.

- Taking this to a broader context with including statistics might help in opening up the door to get more exposure. I know the struggle to get these awards to be Official and putting out a notification has been going on for a looooong while. Maybe it's a good idea to reach out to El Vladeriño to discuss what would make a good award show in his eyes (provided that the problem here isn't the fact that it's an award show). I have no idea what has and has not been talked about of course, but I'm speaking out on my hopes here.

- Permanent records! What if there was a page, internal or external, where you can flip through the results of Oscars Past? And if we're talking about hosting something, maybe that can be used to incorporate an awesome voting system too?

- A better technical solution. I realize it's been a metric crapton of work, every season, to get nominees sorted, creating the forms, lists, diagrams, graphics, counting votes, all dat shiz. It doesn't have to be manual labour each and every time. Sprucing things up with a more fancy-pantsy solution will inadvertently make things more attractive too.

I agree with all this. Make voting easier and more practical, remove most of the categories (best crew, all over/under achiever, hall of fame, best user, all related to "silly games"), than add more merit based categories

I never voted or nominated anyone, as the Oscars always seemed to me more of a popularity contest than anything, but still its sad to see it die. This game need an active community to exists and the Oscars, while people still voted, helped keeping it alive

There are only a few votes to count and I think it could be done quickly. Why is it preferred to eliminate this edition? Has it happened in the past? I'm thinking about tradition. Anyway, syncopes of this kind are not a good signal for future ones.
I remain of the opinion that the Oscar must be an annual competition, not a seasonal one.

Gutted to see this has died, loved seeing who had picked up awards and helped the community of the game. I'd be more than happy to re-vamp this with Kyle's permission, unless I have totally missed the point / new post and it's called something else now? Could change a few categories etc. Any interest from the community?

On a more serious note, we've seen increasingly low levels of voting/participation as seasons went by. Some of the dinos lost interest, and the fresher peeps never caught it.

Is it worth doing this again? It depends. I believe that, if the new host(s) accept the current situation (regardless of if they can revert it eventually) and take this with the love and patience a sillyforum game host prepares a very complex game only 20 people will end up playing, then it might work. There's only so much criticism/suggestions anyone could take to improve it without making this a pieced Frankenstein that ends up pleasing nobody. Be yourselves, have fun and see how it works.

It's good advice, I was thinking maybe have a few revamped awards, maybe a bit more relevant to the modern game, get rid of the negative awards and see how it goes. I mean, everyone likes a tux and a shiny gold star.

If you are looking my way... you are barking at the wrong tree, as I have no power over general notifications :P

Debatable, though. I think a subscription type of notification could be a solution (not that I know how to implement such thing). Going back to my earlier post, if the Oscars interest 20 people, as some forum games, why do the Oscars get notifications and why forum games don't? how many notifications are fair and for what topics? Mods have been moving topics to Interviews Forum and even that privilege was debated at some points, but managed to keep it going regardless.

Both who choose to participate and who choose not to (and prefer not getting notified about it) should be respected; and blaming low participation to advertising is, IMO, shortsighted :).

... I would argue that the Oscar's are about GPRO in a sense that no other sillygame even comes close to! Other than that, in numbers/interest-wise, you are not wrong though. Question remaining, how to spike interest overall?!

I mean, I know nothing about the notification process, but as someone who runs a business, having awards would be a retention matter, so it's a little different to a silly game notification in that sense. More retention, more money.

But it's neither here or there, I'd need Kyle's permission (or whoever set this up originally?) to have a go at it. I can't seem to tag him, because I'm a dino. @Kyle Morris (A42)

Oh wait, worked it out, modern Dino.
